St. Sergius of Radonezh is considered to be one of the greatest examples of Russian monasticism.  Struggling with learning at a young age, he was afforded angelic aid.  Seeking a life of monastic solitude and struggle he moved to the deepest woods to work out his salvation with prayer and labor.  Establishing a monastery, which would become one of the largest monasteries in Russia, Trinity St. Sergius Lavra, St. Sergius and his disciples founded many monasteries in the Russian North.  He also became the spiritual father of the princes of Moscow, encouraging their struggle against the Mongols.  Designed to inspire children from an early age with the ideals of sanctity.

Maria Naumenko is a priest's wife, author, and illustrator.
