Claudia Lukaszewicz (1859–1931) was a children’s writer and teacher. She started writing while a student; her first published poem was modestly signed “Schoolgirl.” She was a schoolteacher for many years and spent her time teaching Russian, putting together readers, and writing primers, textbooks, manuals on music and drama, as well as many stories for children. She also published stories in many children’s periodicals. Her stories are mostly based on the experiences of her personal life and were written to awaken in children a sense of humanity, hard work, and attention to the world around them. After the Russian Revolution, her works were removed from libraries, and she spent her last years in penury, dying in 1931. Despite a long lapse, her books are coming back into print and being read by a new generation of Russian children.
